Our History

Founded to unite

Founded to unite private healthcare providers

The Association was formed on 16 April 1996 following several Steering Committee meetings attended by representatives from leading private healthcare institutions across Zimbabwe.

These founding members laid the foundation for an organisation that would grow into a recognised voice for the private healthcare sector.

Association formed

PHAZ was established by founder members who recognised the need for a coordinated body representing private healthcare providers in Zimbabwe.

2000

AGM and Conference format introduced

The Association began combining its Annual General Meeting with a conference, creating a stronger platform for discussion, collaboration, and sector engagement.

2007–2009

Austerity period

The annual conference format was paused during the years of economic austerity, before continuing as an important Association tradition.

Today

Continued sector support

PHAZ now represents approximately 47 members, collectively providing over 1,500 beds across Zimbabwe’s private healthcare sector.

How We Operate

GOVERNANCE

Constitutional governance

The Association is governed by a Constitution, which provides the framework for its structure, responsibilities, and decision-making.

GOVERNANCE

Secretariat & Executive Committee

The day-to-day affairs of the Association are performed by a secretariat office situated at The Avenues Clinic, guided by regular meetings of the Executive Committee.

SECTOR LIAISON

AHFoZ Liaison

PHAZ liaises with the Association of Healthcare Funders of Zimbabwe through a joint PHAZ/AHFoZ Liaison Committee, particularly on tariff-related matters.

PHAZ also liaises with other organisations as needed to support its members and contribute constructively to Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector.

PHAZ–MoHCC Partnership

From fragmented pressure to structured partnership

PHAZ proposes a practical collaboration platform with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, with clear owners, timelines and scorecard reporting, and respect for patient choice and ethical financing.
